Ball Herding

  • What is Ball Herding?
Ball Herding or Treiball is a dog sport that originated in Germany, you could consider it soccer for dogs.  Ball Herding involves teaching a dog to move out, away from their owner, pause or stop behind the set of Exercise Balls and then push one of nine balls back to the owner, one at a time – this is a time based sport – so the fastest dog wins.  This sport harnesses the skills that working dogs use when working with livestock, and for this reason it is an excellent alternative for working breeds to release some of their natural herding instincts, but in a manner that it easier for owners (because you don’t have to own sheep).  As with any dog sport, your dog handling skills also improve – there is a list of behaviours below which outline some of the important behaviours needed for ball herding. This sport would be good for any dog that enjoy a bit of movement from terriers to working breeds, and it will really help dogs with impulse control and excitement issues also.
